1. Thomas Mckean

Thomas Mckean was of Irish descent,born on March 19, 1734 in a New London Township. He studied law and was licensed as a layer in three different states. He represented Pennsylvania and Delaware for eight and a half years in Congress. He was President of Congress in 1781.

From 1799 to 1808 Thomas Mckean was the Governor of Pennsylvania. He also served in the Revolutionary War, was a member of the State Supreme Court, made Deleware be the very first state to sign the Constitution and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He died on June 24, 1817, his body rests in Philadelphia at the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

2. Dr. William Darlington

Born on April 28, 1782 in Birmingham Township, Dr. William Darlington, whose ancestors followed Penn to Pennsylvania was raised in a family of Quakers, he later became an Episcopalian.

After studying medicine in 1804, he was the first Chester County native to procure an M.D. Degree. For a brief period, Dr. Darlington practiced medicine on a merchant ship, he then practiced in West Chester. Among his many interests was botany, he actually wrote a few books on this subject.

He helped to form a County Medical Society and aided in the formation of West Chester’s Cabinet of Natural Science. He assisted in founding the West Chester Academy in 1812, he also helped to assemble the Chester County Bank of which he was President until he passed away in 1830.  Chester County SEO company now is at the location of his home.

3. Anna Preston, M.D.

Born in West Grove in 1813, Anna Preston was a great teacher, amazing writer and very successful doctor. A member of the first class to graduate from Philadelphia’s Women’s Medical College, Dr. Preston helped to found the Woman’s Medical Hospital.

Anna Preston experiences an era in which women were first being recognized and respected outside their homes, she was openly against slavery, spoke against it and aided slaves who were trying to reach freedom in any way she could. An all time favorite book of Anna Preston was Cousin Anna’s Poems, all who read it throughly enjoyed it. Dr. Anna Preston passed away in 1872.

4. Bayard Taylor

Born on January 11, 1825 in Kennett Square, Bayard Taylor was an American author and poet who was one of the most loved. Even as a child he expressed the desire to see the world, as a grown man that dream became a reality, he traveled the world visiting places such as Europe, Asia and Africa as way of educating himself of the various cultures, languages and races of the world. He was able to put his experiences on paper and his writings and poetry are known the world over.
